Handling security questionnaires
A questionnaire is a buyer's way of asking what your trust centre should already say. The fewer answers you type from scratch, the faster deals close.
Handle security questionnaires from one approved answer library, built from your SOC 2 or ISO 27001 evidence and kept current, and point every reviewer to your trust centre first. Standard formats such as the SIG and CAIQ can be completed once and shared under NDA. RFPs add a security section that works the same way; see answering an RFP security section. Custom spreadsheets still need work, but an answer library turns most of them into matching and review rather than writing.

Which security questionnaires do buyers send?
| Format | Who sends it | Size | Reusable? |
|---|---|---|---|
| SIG Lite or SIG Core (Shared Assessments) | Banks, insurers, large enterprises | Lite is the shorter version; Core is much longer | Yes, complete once per year |
| CAIQ (Cloud Security Alliance) | Buyers of cloud and SaaS services | Hundreds of yes or no questions mapped to the Cloud Controls Matrix | Yes, and publishable to the CSA STAR registry |
| HECVAT | Universities and colleges | Full and lite versions | Yes |
| Custom spreadsheet | Almost everyone else | Anywhere from 20 to several hundred rows | Answers reusable, format not |
| Vendor portal (OneTrust, ProcessUnity and similar) | Enterprises with a third-party risk program | Varies | Answers reusable, typed into their system |
How does a trust centre shorten questionnaires?
A reviewer who has read your controls summary, subprocessor list and SOC 2 report often skips the sections those cover, or accepts "see SOC 2 report, section 4" as an answer. Some buyers will still send the full form because their process requires it. For those, a completed SIG or CAIQ in your trust centre's gated library is often accepted instead of their own format. Ask.
What process works?
- Point to the trust centre first. Before accepting a questionnaire, send the link and ask whether the reviewer still needs one.
- Offer a standard format. A current SIG Lite or CAIQ under NDA replaces many custom spreadsheets.
- Answer from the library. Match each question to an approved answer, adapt the wording, and flag anything new.
- Route new questions to an owner. Engineering answers once; the answer goes into the library.
- Review before sending. Answers often become contract attachments. Someone accountable signs off.
AI drafting is fine, unreviewed answers are not
Tools that draft answers from your library save hours. Treat every draft as a draft: an answer claiming a control you do not run is a misrepresentation that can surface in a contract dispute or after an incident.
When should we get help with questionnaires?
Get help when questionnaires regularly take engineering days, when answers are inconsistent from one buyer to the next, or when they delay signatures. Help ranges from a one-off answer library build to a managed trust centre with questionnaires as an add-on, quoted per questionnaire or as a monthly volume. The questionnaire volume estimator shows what your pipeline will bring.
If the questionnaire in front of you has a deal date attached, security questionnaire help compares answering it yourselves, project help and a managed service, with the evidence each common question needs. Sent a standard form? SIG Lite vs CAIQ tells you which one you have.
Common questions
How long does a security questionnaire take to complete?
With a current answer library, a 100-question custom questionnaire is usually a few hours of matching and review. Without one, the same questionnaire can take several days of an engineer's time, spread over a couple of weeks.
Can we refuse a questionnaire and send our SOC 2 report instead?
You can offer it, and many reviewers accept a SOC 2 report plus a short list of follow-up questions. Regulated buyers often must complete their own form regardless, so ask rather than refuse.
Is a SIG or CAIQ better to complete in advance?
Complete the one your buyers ask for most. Financial services buyers lean to SIG, cloud buyers to CAIQ. Having one current and gated in your trust centre saves the most time.
